Tips for Selecting the Correct Halter

Congratulations on your decision to buy your horse a beautiful new show halter!  We know it can be a very tough decision determining which style and color(s) you should order.  Below are some tips that we have found to be very helpful when selecting that just right halter!

Tip 1:
If you are headed for the show ring always select the halter to compliment your horses color.  This may not necessarily be your favorite color or the color you normally use for your horses accessories but you want the halter to enhance the horses profile not detract from it.

Tip 2:
Select a halter that compliments your horses facial structure.  If your horse is very fine boned we would suggest the Jewel Series, or the plain cable halters.  These are more slim-line and don't draw a lot of attention to the halter itself.  If your horse is a little heavier boned the traditional halters will also look nice.  These halters are the halters that have the beading in one sequence rather than split into several sequences (such as the Blue Iris, or the Deep Purple).

Tip 3:
If you still are unsure as to what color to choose for your horse, think of what your show outfit will be.  As the handler you should always try to compliment your horse and present a coordinating pair to the judge and audience.  Make sure that you are not too overstated.  For example...Do not choose a red halter for your horse and accent your outfit with purple.  If your show outfit has accents of blue, choose something with blue tones.

The following are guidelines for which bead colors look best with certain coat colors.

Black - Black horses look fantastic in either silver or gold.  This is where your personal preference comes in.  You can use just about any color of glass bead also depending on how much you want it to stand out and be noticed.  Red is always very sharp looking but is more noticeable.  Amethyst looks especially nice and is very subtle.

Brown, Chestnut, Sorrel - Silver or gold tones both look nice with these horses.  It is a matter of personal preference.  You can use just about any color of glass bead also depending on how much you want it to stand out and be noticed.  The Jewel Series done with hunter green beads is always a great choice!

Bay - I personally tend to prefer gold tones on a bay.  This is merely a personal opinion though and I have seen many bays look spectacular in silver tones.  I also recommend the Pure Elegance (mixed gold & silver tones) as it looks phenomenal on bays.  Colored bead choices are another choice of your preference.  I tend to like hunter green, emerald green,  and red.

Palomino - Palominos look best in gold tones.  For colored beads I would recommend the hunter green, tortoiseshell, burgundy, light aqua & dark aqua.  This coat color really looks nice with almost any bead color.

Buckskin - Depending on the color of the buckskin you can use either gold or silver.  I would suggest gold tones for the lighter and more golden buckskins.  For the chocolate buckskins silver looks nicer.

Grey - Horses with Grey coats usually look better with silver tones.  Choose halters that have silver as their corner ring color, hardware color and metal bead color. Depending on the shade of gray, usually any color of glass bead looks nice.  The Silver Moon or Silver Elegance looks especially nice on shades of greys.  I also recommend any blue tones such as the cobalt, dark teal, and blue iris.

Pintos - These horses can be a hard call when trying to match a halter.  The Legend halter looks wonderful on pintos.  It does give an entirely different look than the traditional cable halter.

Choosing for Multiple Horses - If you are purchasing a show halter and want to be able to use it for multiple horses without having to try an coordinate coat colors to bead colors choose halters such as the:  Pure Elegance, Silver Elegance, Silver Moon or the Plain Cable Halter.  All of these halters are basically interchangeable between similiar sized horses and usually match any show outfit!
